Project.
The client came to Blacktail Design Studio looking to upgrade the stereo in his workshop. Working extensively with classic car restoration, the client was looking for something that was modern and visually interesting but that would not look out of place nestled amongst 60's and 70's classic sports cars. The design also had to be easy to move around, incorporate a retractable power cord, and, of course, it had to sound great.
Design.
Some initial ideation lead to key design elements such as a full automotive stereo system, handles for transportation, and space for storage and phone docking. The concept of a tower shaped boom-box quickly became the most promising, and gave the project its name: Boom Tower.
The client also expressed interest in classic sports cars and vintage road course racing. Further development led to the creation of a graphics package modeled after classic touring car liveries.
Prototype.
Build.
Boom Tower stands 50" tall and boasts a complete automotive stereo system packed into its 9" square frame. Rockford Fosgate 4" round and 6"x9" speakers provide plenty of volume, and the Alpine head unit controls inputs from either a CD, satellite radio, or a smartphone. A two inch deep recess at the top of Boom Tower provides space for tool storage, smartphone docking, or a removable insert with cupholders. An eight foot long power cord retracts fully into the frame of Boom Tower through a system of internal pulleys. Rubber feet inside the base of Boom Tower provide stability on any surface and small handles cut into the sides allow for easy lifting and moving.
Phase II.
Further cosmetic enhancements, such as a vinyl wrap styled after a classic race car livery, custom head unit bezel, and authentic automotive cupholders, are all coming as part of Phase II.
